Guillotine Shear Blades Sharpen&Replaced

Oct 08, 2022

When&How The Guillotine Shear Blades Sharpen&Replaced

Shearing machine blades, included  rectangular upper and lower blades of a guillotine shear each have four cutting edges, one at each corner when viewed from the side. This allows each blade to be rotated and reused three additional times before the blade needs sharpening.

How to Check and Confirm When Your Shear Blades Are Getting Dull

Do you know when  your shear blades need to be changed?  If your shear blades used to cut clean and now don’t, then you might need to change them. Dull blades will tear the workpiece instead of properly cutting it, resulting in edges that are heavily burred, are work hardened, otherwise deformed. It is important to recognize that other factors can contribute to unsuitable workpiece edges, so these should be ruled out before changing the cutting blades.. Some of the factors are:

Wrong  blades gap setting. The term “gap” refers to the clearance distance between the top and bottom cutting shears blades when they pass each other during the cutting process. Blades gap is an available adjustment on most shears to allow them to be set to work with different types and thicknesses of material. If using big gap for thin sheet, damage to the material edge that resembles the harm caused by a dull blade can occur, such as being rolled over or having severe burring. If using too smaller gap, the blades may get stuck in the workpiece mid-cut. Blade gap is one of the most important settings on a guillotien cutting shears, so be sure to consult the manual, mounted chart, or other information provided by the shear manufacturer to set the proper gap for each material type and thickness being cut.

Incorrect rake cutting angle setting. While the angle of the blade—known as “rake angle”—can be increased to reduce the tonnage needed to cutting thicker or harder metals, bigger cutting rake angle can result in a deformed workpiece. Rake angle may need to be reduced to avoid problems in the cut-off section of metal, such as bowing, where the ends curve up higher than the center, cambering, where the material stays flat but the ends curve away from the shearing cutting blades, or twisting, where the material “corkscrews” so that opposite corners are higher than the center.

Malfunctioning holddown cylinders. If the cutting sheet workpiece is not securely held in place during the full shearing process, deformities in the edges can result, the sheet cutting material may be have big moving action when in cutting full procedures. Always make sure that the hold-downs are working properly, and that sufficient hold-down pressure is being applied.

Other factors included  dirt or debris on the blade or material, trying to cutting thick material beyond the shearing machine's Max cutting capacity.

What to do when you find your cutting baldes are full?

When you are find your sheet metal shearing blades getting dull, you may adopt the following solutions:

Rotate the shearing cutting bladesMost of cutting shear blades are designed&fabricated to have more than one cutting edge, normally have 2 or 4 cutting edges, so the first solution is to rotate the blades. Called turning the blades, this process may require qualified service technicians to perform it safely and efficiently, and many fabrication machine maintenance facilities advertise blade flipping services. If you rotate your blades inhouse, be sure to follow all manufacturer guidelines for proper removal and remounting of the blades, it's need special procedures  of setting and adjusting cutting blades once rotate new blades edges.

Sharpen the cutting shear blades. Once all the cutting edges(2 and 4 cutting edges) of a blade have been dulled, the next step is to have the blade sharpened. While blades may be able to be ground and polished inhouse. A professional sharpening facility will take pains to remove only enough metal from each blade to ensure sharp cutting edges, allowing the blade to be resharpened several times. If done by your own staff, there are several factors that need to be observed, such as maintaining the parallelism of the sides and not overheating the blade. Check information from the blade manufacturer for specific instructions.

Replace the full set shearing cutting blades. Blades can only be sharpened a certain number of times before they reach the allowable minimum thickness and minimum width for use on your model of shear. Once you turn the blades and sharpened the blades with many times,  the blade will need to be replaced.
