When you are coosing the correct die opening for your press brake, unless you’re calculating the exact values for the lower die opening, you should almost always use an amount equal to eight times the material thickness—and never less than six times the material thickness if too thin material for bending . This applies to all bending operations, whether you’re producing sharp, minimum, or perfect bending redius. For thicker sheet materials or larger bend radius for bending high tensile strength sheet, the formulas are a little different. These include radius, surface, and profound radius bends, all of which have inside bend radius greater than 125% of the material thickness, some Hardox 400, Hardox 450 should be required 1.5 times V opening than sheet thickness and also big radius for top punch and lower V dies.
If you are calculating geometrically perfect values for the die opening, and the inside bend radius is 125% of the material thickness or less, you start with the following formula: Die opening = Outside bend radius × 3.429.
