Many sheet metal bending shop owners or operatores still have many doubts for proper press brakes setting up, so what's the perfect procedures of setting bending?

 The efficiency and the profitability of a press brake are measured by the number of completed and correct parts you can produce in a given period of time. When setup takes too long, less time is devoted to bending parts with money back.

For traditional bending machines,  the only way to reduce the cost per part is to bending a lot of parts as possible with same setting up, same tools, same bending procedures.

Also bending precision is also vwery important as  setting up time. Therefore, you must try to reduce setup time while improving your bending accuracy. Having and following a standard bending setting procedure can help with this and have a profound effect on your press brake's efficiency.

Normally standard bending cycle setup procedure has the following steps:

  1. Check the bending profiels drawing.

  2. Select the press brake top punch and bottom dies

  3. Determine the bending tonnage

  4. Choose  the correct press brake.

  5. Confirm the tooling position on bending machines

  6. Install the press brake tooling.

  7. Program the press brake with proper bending sequence

  8. Test bending with actual profiles.

  9. Correct the program if any wrong spots

  10. Run parts with mass production

    Check the bending profiles drawing.

Press brake Operators need to know their parts completely. If the parts have been made before, double check of the drawing may not be necessary; but  the operator must be know the folowing items:

  • Sheet Material type and thickness.

  • Metal profiles Flange dimensions and flange tolerances.

  • Metal bending Angles required and angle tolerances for each bending steps.

  • Inside radius of angles.

  • Sheet Blank size.

    Select the press brake top punch and bottom dies

    All press brake tooling selection shoudl be based on metal bending profiles. Your choices are air bending, bottom bending, coining, or a special application.

    Like your sheet bending drawing specifies  radius is at least 1.25 times the metal thickness, air bend tooling works.

    You should be choose the corect bending  tooling that is at least as accurate. Worn tooling cannot produce accurate parts, regardless of the press brake's accuracy.

    Determine the bending tonnage

    Calculating&Estimating the metal bending tonnage requirement should be second nature to operators.

    Tonnage charts are available for air bending. For bottom bending, a good estimate is four times the air bend tonnage. Coining requires some eight times the air bend tonnage.  A bend should never be attempted until the tonnage requirement is determined and compared to the tonnage available.

    Choose  the correct press brake.

    If you only have one press brake, this you can ignore the choice of which press brake for bending, But if you do have two or more press brakes, be sure that the one chosen is best-suited for the current bending jobs.

    Every press brake has a tons-per-inch limit in the center of the machine. To determine the tons per inch for your brake, simply multiply the distance between the side frames by 0.6  and divide the machine tonnage by your answer.

    Confirm the tooling position on bending machines

    Install the press brake tooling.

    Once you have determined the tooling location on press brake, you should install the tooling and align the upper and lower tooling for making the bends.

    Tooling installation is the most time-consuming, and therefore the most costly, step in the setup procedure

    Using a Wila hydraulic clamp for the tooling makes this procedure easier and faster; using snap tooling is even more efficient. Both of these features are available for all AHWY Yawei china cnc press brakes.

    Program the press brake with proper bending sequence

  • Whether NC or CNC press brake, the press brake should be programmed properly for bending your parts,Manual programming may take some trial and error, but a CNC metal bending machine usually can be programmed very quickly.Perhaps one reasonable programming takes so long is that some operators are not trained properly. Press brake operator should be learning how to operate bendingbrakes. Of course , programming a CNC press metal brake takes less time .

    Test bending with actual profiles.

  • Make a test bend on a scrap part so you don't ruin a good blank.

    Correct the program if any wrong spots

    Corrections to the program should be made during the testing steps.

    Test bending and program correcting should be done immediately once setting up tools, Program corrections should not be made after an acceptable part has been shaped.

    Run parts with mass production

    After proper setup, you're ready to run good accurate parts.
