When a bottleneck is developed in a press brake area and management decides to just go and purchase another press brake, without researching what is the best machine for their application, it could be a mistake. Many times when a folder is added to a multiple press brake facility, it is found that a folder will make the existing press brakes more productive at what they do best — and that might be giving the big panel and multiple set up work to the folding machine.
We in the folder world have heard from many manufacturers that it is getting harder to find good press brake operators. It was not that long ago that a press brake operator could do the following:
1) Read the part drawing.
2) Pull the tooling for the job.
3) Set up the press brake.
4) Fold the part.
5) Check Q/A to make sure the part is correct.
6) Maintain the machine and tooling.
In today’s sheet metal manufacturing world, it takes two, three and sometimes four different people to do those sheet metal bending&folding important tasks.
The control on the folding machine will take care of these tasks automatically. When the part is programmed, it selects the tooling. If it’s a manually tooled machine, it tells the operator where to install the tools on the tool rail, defines the folding sequence and gives him instruction on the screen on each line of program so he knows exactly what to do.
In many cases we suggest that a new folding machine not be given to your best press brake operator. His knowledge is not needed with this machine. Setups are done in less than five minutes. Crowning is automatic and he could become bored and dislike the machine because all he is doing is folding parts.
Folding machines may differ in size, speed, capacity and accuracy. However, the folding process is done in pretty much the same manner.
1) The blank is positioned on the CNC-controlled integrated sheet support backgauge system.
2) The blank is then clamped between the upper beam tool and the lower clamping beam.
3) The folding beam then sweeps up or down, depending on the programmed direction of the first flange.
4) One set of universal tools is all that is required.
The way folding machines bend metal makes them well suited for large panels, multiple-setup parts and surface-sensitive materials.
The handling and positioning of large panels doesn’t need to be a difficult task. On a folding machine, the integrated sheet support and backgauging system holds the overall weight of the part. This allows a single operator to create a part by folding only the flange. The machine supports the material rather than the operator having to, so and only the flange changes plane. Semiskilled operators can create quality parts after only a few hours of training.

During sheet metal bending procedures, the folding beam rotates up around its pivot point and then rolls away from the sheet material. It’s like folding a paper airplane: first you clamp the overall part and then you bend the flange up to the desired metal sheet angle. Because the movement between the tools and the material surface is virtually eliminated, folding creates minimal or no material surface damage. This is especially important when bending sensitive-surface material such as stainless steel. Even lacquered and coated metal can be folded with no shoulder marks from the punch and die.
Folding machines don’t allow the material to slip or move during the bending process. For this reason, folding machines can bend perforated materials with repeatable flange dimensions
Accuracy of sheet metal bending&folding
The integrated sheet support and backgauge system positions the part, instead of an operator trying to hold a flange against small backgauge fingers. Because the folding beam always references the overall of the material instead of the flanges, variations in material thickness do not influence the folding result. Sheet size intolerances are folded into the first flange, so all other flanges and the length and width of the part always produce the correct dimensions.
Segmented tools handle internal bends and other sheet metal applications.
With precision folding systems, the folding beam swings up with 0.1-degree accuracy, adding to part quality and repeatability. This accuracy makes all downstream operations such as welding and assembly much easier and more productive.
Folding machines without a tool changer allow for multiple-station setup along the working width of the machine. Parts with numerous bends and different bend angles, open or closed hems, and bends inside the part can be finished with one setup and one handling. The part stays on the sheet support system and is positioned by the backgauging system so the operator doesn’t have to lift the part. Therefore, even large parts can be run by a single operator. The idea is to pick up a blank and put down a completed folded part in one handling by one operator with one setup.
Some machines offer a CNC that shows a library with finished part icons. With the icon system, the operator selects the desired shape, inputs the variable flange or angle dimensions, and presses a button. The CNC automatically programs the part and shows the bending sequence. With a Touch Screen control the operator can draw a part with just a point and click. The library shows the shape of the part, so a single master program is good for an entire assembly. The operator can quickly update the program later if the design changes.
Folding machines are also safe to press brake or folder operate. Folding machine Operators do not support the weight of the material and they are not in contact with the workpiece during the clamping and bending cycles. This makes them inherently safe to operate. Light curtains and/or safety mats can be added should the end user desire such components.

Typically, a folding machine uses a single, universal set of tools to bend a very wide range of applications, regardless of the angle, flange dimension, metal thickness, or metal type; different upper beam tools are not needed. This results in fewer tool changes and shorter setup times, making the folding system suitable for short-run applications. This also makes for a very
small inventory of tools for the folding machine.
